This Dianthus orange variety is bi-colored bringing both orange and cream together to create a lovely sherbet-like appearance. This Carnation seed produces double, beautifully scented, fringed flowers that grow as a perennial in frost free zones. Carnation flowers can grow as annuals where winters are cold. Grow carnation flower seeds in borders, planters, cottage gardens and rock gardens. For Carnation flowers the first year, start Dianthus seeds indoors 10 – 12 weeks before the last frost, planting 2 – 3 flower seeds per pot or cell. Cover the Carnation seeds with no more than 1/16 inch of soil and keep the seeds moist until germination. Move seedlings to a cool, bright place to continue growing, then harden the Carnation plants off in the garden a week or two before the last frost. Where winters are mild, Carnation seeds may be planted outdoors spring through early fall. Planting and careInsects and Diseases: Insect and disease problems are infrequent. If insect or disease problems occur, treat early with insecticides, repellents, or fungicide.Supporting Tall Carnations: You need to know ahead how tall each variety will grow in order to provide the right kind of support. The support should be set in place soon after planting, or as the plants emerge from the ground in the spring, so the stems will remain up.Carnation careCarnations are grown from seed. Carnation seeds can be directly seeded into your flower garden, or started indoors for transplanting later. If planting outdoors, sow them early in the spring. But, make sure the soil is not too wet.

When sowing seeds, cover lightly with 1/4 inches of fine soil. Space seeds or seedlings 12″ apart.
If you are growing perennials, you can propagate them from cuttings or by division. Once your plants have been established, they can be propagated by separation in the fall.
